Freedom for political prisoners
International human rights NGOs, including the Human Rights House Foundation, are deeply concerned by the continued politically motivated imprisonment of persons in Azerbaijan for exercising their right to freedom of expression. Right to freedom of association in Azerbaijan - call for an opinion from the Venice Commission
Fifteen human rights organisations jointly call upon the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe to request an opinion of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (the Venice Commission) stating whether the July 2009 amendments to the Law on Non-governmental Organisations (public unions and foundations), and the new regulations issued on 17 March 2011 in Azerbaijan are in line with the European Convention of Human Rights. 08 Apr 2011 »
Statement on the closing of the Human Rights House Azerbaijan
On 10 March 2011, the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Azerbaijan ordered the Human Rights House Azerbaijan, partner of the international Human Rights House Network, to cease all activities immediately. According to the Ministry of Justice, in the future the Human Rights House Azerbaijan will be allowed to carry out activities only upon prior agreement with the State. Youth activists targeted as freedom of expression clampdown continues
Member organisations of the International Partnership Group for Azerbaijan condemn the recent wave of arrests of youth activists and bloggers in connection with planned pro-democracy protests in the country, and call for their immediate release.
